Farm\u00e1cia do Padr\u00e3o \u2013 is said, later Farm\u00e1cia do Padr\u00e3o, is said to have suggested to Mr. Almeida (the owner) the set-up of a small industrial unit, with some machines, in order to better serve their customers. They then tried to register the new company as \u201cLaborato\u0301rios Biol\u201d (for Biology), but to no avail. Next came the idea to try BIAL - with \"Bi\", which is a prefix that means twice or two, and \"al\", which is a syllable repeated both in A\u0301lvaro and in Almeida.
